The Importance of Healthcare Training in Construction

Even without the crisis involving the spreading of COVID-19, when it comes to safety and healthcare in construction, construction workers need to take extra care on job sites. A great number of substances harmful to human health can be found on construction sites in the form of debris and dust. Healthcare training for construction workers is added to the overall importance it already has for the workers to be safe and healthy.  On the other hand, construction workers hired for construction projects that involve renovation work in “sensitive” areas such as hospitals, are said to lack the proper training to protect the patients near the job site.

The Lack of Proper Healthcare Training in Construction

Among the surveyed construction companies specialized in healthcare construction and renovations, only 52% claim that project owners always or often seek professional guidance e from construction teams when working on healthcare construction.  Up to 77% of the surveyed companies claimed that healthcare training for construction workers is necessary at the start of such projects. What seems to be the main problem in the lack of proper training for workers when it comes to healthcare in construction is the fact that these programs are usually targeting managers and supervisors instead of construction workers. That is how many construction workers aren’t even aware of the probability that they might pose a threat to the patients settled near the place of renovations and construction sites.

    Training Targeted at Construction Workers

Even in cases where programs are focused on providing proper training for construction workers, training is only conducted briefly and ahead of the start of the project.  Moreover, training usually lasts less than 2 hours and often doesn’t take more than a single hour. This timeframe is not enough to prepare the workers to protect themselves and others from debris, dust, and other harmful substances.
