As the situation with the spreading of COVID-19 across the Us is getting more serious and growing in proportions, only essential businesses are allowed to continue. Construction business is deemed as essential; however, some states and areas have taken more rigorous measures.
For example, health officials from the Bay Area decided to shut down a great number of construction projects on Tuesday, March 31st. The projects that were shut down included market-rate housing and construction projects related to office buildings. These projects were previously deemed as essential.
It is not the first time that the construction industry has faced a natural disaster. However, the current disaster involving the COVID-19 outbreak is affecting the industry at its core. This is the case because construction workers are fearing their safety, which is why more and more workers insist on staying at home. Even in times of hurricanes and floods, construction firms would suffer material damage and close the site until everything the disaster is over – construction workers will be back in no time.
In the meantime, construction companies are looking for ways to keep the spirits high. As BRIQUP, we are talking to industry leaders to help the community.
Here are some tips, tricks and examples from industry veteran Mat Phillips, Project Superintendent with Dome Construction, for how you can keep spirits high, stay connected, and remain productive as the world and the industry practices social distancing:

Training and development
I feel Dome Construction is doing an outstanding job with respect to maintaining spirits, keeping our entire company connected, engaged and supported. Our Training and development team are working overtime to produce and facilitate industry and person specific content for all of us.
Connect with the legends and seniors
The field side of Dome has 3 to 5 hours of training available five days a week at this time. The opportunity to connect with the legends and seniors of our company has been invaluable and I feel so lucky to have an ongoing opportunity, and now a personal connection with these great guys and girls moving forward. Relationships have been established, reinforced and the communication and knowledge sharing is at a level I have never witnessed in any company I’ve worked for in the past.
Help contribute and connect frequently
What’s great is that the content and training topics are not only delivered by the development team, but by anyone at any level that wants to share or teach or assist in the independent growth of individuals. Team members from all departments are raising their hand to help contribute and connect frequently.
Think of longevity of the business
I’m so proud, and lucky to be working for such a thoughtful company that is dedicated to the longevity of the business, and the careers of each employee under their roof.
