NYC: Shutdowns and Fines for Construction Firms That Don’t Comply with COVID-19 Guidelines

The New York City Department of Buildings has issued new guidelines to fight the spreading of the Coronavirus across the city. That is how the industry of construction was further restricted at the end of March. The only projects in construction that are allowed to continue are emergency projects and construction crucial to the public interest. Furthermore, construction projects with only one worker on the site are allowed to continue as well. Construction firms need to comply with the latest guidelines on preventing the COVID-19 from spreading further from this point.

Fines and Shutdowns for Construction Sites in New York City

New York City imposed more restrictions on construction firms by allowing only essential projects to continue. Besides, the Department of Buildings revoked After Hours Variance permits. That means that essential construction can be authorized for overnight and weekend work. However, only essential and emergency projects can get AHV permits. Businesses and contractors dealing with non-essential constructions are facing fines in case operations continue despite the guidelines and orders. Fines for failing to comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines might go up to 10k dollars. As DOB Commissioner, Melanie E. La Rocca stated in an official press conference that the priority is set to preventing the spreading of the COVID-19. La Rocca added that the violators will face “stiff enforcement”, stating that the city can’t afford do operate business as usual due to the pandemics.

Which Construction Projects May Continue with Operations in NYC?

Construction projects deemed as essential are allowed to continue all operations. Construction sites with only one worker on the site are also allowed to move forward with construction during the time of crisis. Moreover, essential construction is said to be roadwork, emergency repairs, and constructions, as well as construction in the utility sector and healthcare. Affordable and transition housing projects can also continue with work. The building of shelters for the homeless is likewise considered to be essential. All construction sites also need to respect the social distancing rules, as well as protection and prevention guidelines.
